Improved Electricity Generation Unit Commitment and Dispatch Using Stochastic Optimization

OG-14-014

Summary

This proposal requests funds to improve day-ahead commitment of thermal electricity generating units with high penetration of variable generation. We propose to develop metrics for evaluating probabilistic scenarios of load and variable generation, to efficiently assess the quality of stochastic unit commitment solutions, and to compare stochastic with robust optimization methods for unit commitment. The results will strengthen a planned proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy on similar advances in intra-day lookahead commitment and dispatch processes. An external proposal is planned for summer of 2015.
