Summary

In September 2004, Quy Tran Lam began generating electricity for his family’s 4500 sq. ft. home with a 10-kW Bergey Excel wind turbine installed on a 100 ft. guyed-lattice tower. Lam and his family own 70 acres of land six miles northeast of Vinton, most of which they’ve restored to native prairie, and they sited the turbine near their home on the highest point on their property.

Project History Lam says they began the project “with more of a global perspective in mind.” They hoped the turbine would provide all of their electricity needs, but they remained connected to the grid and were less interested in pure self-sufficiency than in making the most of the natural resources available to them.

Tjaden Farms is a family farming operation about 12 miles north of Charles City, run by brothers Larry and Dean Tjaden and Larry’s son Scott. The electricity they produce is sold to Dairyland Power Cooperative of Lacrosse, Wisc. via transmission lines owned by Iowa-based Heartland Power Cooperative. Originally the Tjaden’s received an avoided cost rate of $0.03 per kWh. In 2008, that rate was adjusted to .065 per kWh, greatly increasing the cash flow of the project.

Summary

In 1993, the Spirit Lake School District installed one of the nation’s first school wind turbines. Their success with the 250 kW Windworld turbine, connected to their elementary school, led them to add a 750 kW NEG Micon turbine in 2001 to power all additional district facilities, including their high school, middle school, vocational-tech building, district offices, maintenance building, and athletic fields.

Project History The district funded $119,000 of the $239,500 cost of the first turbine with a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. Lacking such an opportunity for the second turbine, the district turned to the Iowa Energy Center’s Alternative Energy Revolving Loan Program (AERLP) to cover $250,000 of the total $780,000 cost with no-interest financing.

Summary

In June 2004, Paul Neppel installed a 1.5 MW NEG Micon wind turbine just west of Armstrong on a section of the 2800-acre farm he operates with his son. Neppel sells his power directly to Alliant Energy, and the $1.6 million project was one of the first utility-scale turbines in Iowa to be brought online by a private landowner.

Project History: Neppel says he first became inspired by the success of two wind turbines installed by the nearby Spirit Lake School District in 1993 and 2001, respectively. He became more serious about investing in his own turbine when the electricity bills on his farm began to approach $200,000 per year. Neppel says that about two-thirds of the nearly 2,000,000 kWh of electricity his farm consumes each year stems from the cooperatively-owned confinement hog operation on his land that houses around 12,000 sows and feeder pigs. Additional energy use arises from a variety of sources, including three households, 1500 head of cattle, grain driers and outbuildings.

The turbine had previously been used on a California wind farm, and Montgomery hoped it would decrease the electricity bill for his confinement hog operation and 750-acre farm near Bryant in far east-central Iowa.

Project History:  Montgomery says he became interested in acquiring a wind turbine in about 2000 but found nothing available. He learned about the Enertech turbine through a newspaper ad placed by a turbine dealer located in Wisconsin.

Summary

In November 2002, Gordon Peterson installed a 20 kW Jacobs wind turbine on his acreage in Ely, just south of Cedar Rapids. Peterson’s only electric use on the property comes from a small hobby barn, but through a net metering agreement with Alliant Energy his excess production is credited to the energy bills on two other meters.

The first meter covers the common areas of rental property he owns below his second floor dental office in Cedar Rapids. Any remaining credits apply to the meter at the dental office itself, though Peterson’s turbine has seldom produced this much power.
