Where would I get a home windmill? What brands work? What do they cost?

Flying Hippo / July 22, 2016

The Small Wind Certification Council (SWCC) is an independent organization that tests the performance of small wind turbines. Small wind turbine manufacturers are not subjected to industry established performance standards by which meaningful comparisons can be based. Manufacturers voluntarily submit their product(s) to the SWCC for testing and performance certification as a consumer educational and protection service. Not all wind turbine manufacturers participate in the certification process. A listing of those turbines processed by the SWCC is on their website: http://smallwindcertification.org/. The price of a small wind turbine is highly variable depending on size/rating, tower type and height, site conditions, etc. Expect the installed costs to range between $4,000 – $10,000/installed kilowatt. The energy generation of the turbine can be estimated using the Iowa Energy Center Calculator located at http://iowaenergycenter.org/wind-calculator-tool/
