  • Solar energy: a job-creation engine

According to The Solar Foundation’s annual job census, the solar industry has added 13,800 jobs so far this year to a base of 105,000 employees. In 2012 alone, this is a 13 percent growth in jobs, making the solar industry among the fastest growing sectors in the U.S. economy.

The boom in jobs is mostly downstream from solar research and production, forming jobs like installers and companies who provide logistics and equipment for installers to do their job. There are also thousands being employed in the new financing business around the solar economy and the software and information technology services required to patch alternative energy to the current power grid.

The solar industry currently provides about 0.5 percent of our power supply and already employs 119,000 Americans. Imagine how many we could employ if solar energy grows to 10 percent of power supply?
